Marshall Plastic Film Wins Best Small Business Award

Michigan Small Business Development Center Award 2013

MARTIN, Mich. – Marshall Plastic Film is one of twelve companies from around the state of Michigan that has been selected to receive the Michigan Small Business Development Center’s (MI-SBDC) Best Small Business Award.  These companies were chosen from over 5,500 small businesses that the MI-SBDC provided with confidential counseling and training in 2013.  The Best Small Business award recipients were identified based on their success in creating jobs, increasing sales, improving their business strategy and their involvement with the MI-SBDC.  These recipients will be honored at the Michigan Celebrates Small Business awards ceremony on May 6, 2014.

“The Michigan SBDC works with thousands of small businesses each year,” says Carol Lopucki, State Director of the MI-SBDC.  “The Best Small Business award provides an opportunity to acknowledge twelve of the most exceptional small businesses who have made great strides in accomplishing their goals and growing Michigan’s economy.  We’re excited to celebrate their successes.”

Marshall Plastic Film has been a vital part of their community for over 40 years.  As largest private employer in the village of Martin, Marshall Plastic Film has a significant impact not only on the lives of its 53 employees, but also on the entire local economy.

This company has a rich history as one of Southwest Michigan’s leading plastics manufacturers, serving the automotive, industrial packaging, liquid storage and pharmaceutical industries.  Owners John Roggow and Ann Jameson began working with the Southwest Michigan SBDC in 2012 to explore the possibility of buying the company out from one of its primary owners, A. Marshall Forsberg.  Roggow and Jameson were able to successfully purchase the company and have since worked with the SBDC to complete a Strategic Needs Assessment and financial analysis, followed by strategic planning.

A majority of Marshall Plastic Film’s sales are regional, however they regularly supply pharmaceutical products to India, South Korea and South Africa.  As part of their growth strategy, Roggow and Jameson utilized the SBDC’s export consulting services to begin researching additional international markets to enter in to.

“The consistent counseling we’ve received from the Michigan SBDC has kept us focused on the most important issues we are facing,” said Roggow.  “They have truly helped keep our business on track for continued growth.”
