What Is Flame Retardant Plastic?

7/20/15

Marshall Plastic Film manufactures our line of flame retardant plastics by adding a retardant that increases resistance to ignition, suppresses smoke, limits flame spread and prevents dripping. It’s important to know that flame retardant plastics are not incapable of burning, rather, their purpose is to slow the development of a fire to give anyone in the affected area time to escape.

This history of flame retardant materials is a long and storied one. Beginning in 450 B.C. when Egyptians sought to create a flame resistant wood by submerging it in alum. From those simple roots, the concept spread for centuries and was applied to a number of end uses: more durable military materials, fire-proof theater curtains and flame resistant clothing.

Today, one of the primary uses for fire-safe plastics is in the automobile industry. So high is the demand for these polymers that the U.S. Department of Transportation has created a federal standard – Federal Motor Vehicle Standard 302 – that specifies “the burn resistance requirements for materials used in the occupant compartments of motor vehicles.”

At Marshall Plastic Film, we take our commitment to creating safe and responsible plastics seriously. Naturally, all of our films conform to FMVS 302 and, further, they comply with UL 181, which is a standard that covers factory-made air ducts and air connectors. Since many of our flame retardant plastic films are utilized in automobile interiors, we rigorously test each and every product to ensure that they meet our standards.

Our high temperature protective sheets are available in a variety of sizes and provide protection against bleed through of solvents, performance in bake cycles up to 315 degrees, resistance to paint flaking and translucency for accurate placement. Given the range of features afforded by our fire-safe plastics, it’s easy to see why Marshall Plastic Film’s products are utilized so frequently in industries where protection against heat matters.
